Triple Your Sales-Email Open Rate: Subject Lines and Bodies (11 Templates)
How to lift B2B cold-email open rates from 20% to 60% — 11 subject-line templates and a body structure (the BAB framework), with real good-vs-bad email cards. Includes a safe daily sending pace.
B2B cold email averages a 20-25% open rate and a 1-3% reply rate. Yet with the same tool and the same list, there are plenty of cases that reach 60-70% open rates and 8-12% reply rates just by optimizing the subject line and body. What's the difference? This article explains it, with 11 templates.
Five principles for subject lines
- Under 40 characters (so it doesn't get cut off on mobile)
- Include a number (specificity = credibility)
- Include the recipient's name or company name (personalization)
- No "A proposal" or "An announcement" (it gets flagged as a sales email and halves the open rate)
- A question, or a number plus a benefit

The strongest body structure (the BAB framework)
Before-After-Bridge: the current problem → the state after it's solved → the means to solve it, in three steps. It's the ultimate persuasion structure, complete in under 100 words.
Five things you must not do
- "It's been a while" (when you've never met)
- "Our industry-leading ___" (opening with a company pitch)
- "We'd like 30 minutes of your time" (stealing the recipient's time)
- "If we don't hear back, we'll contact you again" (threatening)
- "We'd appreciate your kind consideration" (no specifics)
Ten small moves to lift reply rates
- Send timing: weekday Tuesday 10am or Thursday 2pm
- Body under 5 lines (short enough to need no scrolling)
- One CTA only ("Mind if I send over a doc?" is the strongest)
- Use a check mark or an arrow in the subject (stands out in the inbox list)
- Signature is just company name + URL + unsubscribe
- Include a P.S. (plenty of people read the P.S.)
- Reply within 30 minutes if you get a reply
- If there's no reply, follow up exactly once after 7 days
- At least one line of personalization per record
- Don't attach files (put them at a URL)
