Five principles for subject lines

  1. Under 40 characters (so it doesn't get cut off on mobile)
  2. Include a number (specificity = credibility)
  3. Include the recipient's name or company name (personalization)
  4. No "A proposal" or "An announcement" (it gets flagged as a sales email and halves the open rate)
  5. A question, or a number plus a benefit

  • "It's been a while" (when you've never met)

Ten small moves to lift reply rates

  1. Send timing: weekday Tuesday 10am or Thursday 2pm
  2. Body under 5 lines (short enough to need no scrolling)
  3. One CTA only ("Mind if I send over a doc?" is the strongest)
  4. Use a check mark or an arrow in the subject (stands out in the inbox list)
  5. Signature is just company name + URL + unsubscribe
  6. Include a P.S. (plenty of people read the P.S.)
  7. Reply within 30 minutes if you get a reply
  8. If there's no reply, follow up exactly once after 7 days
  9. At least one line of personalization per record
  10. Don't attach files (put them at a URL)
